Shameless Plugging
Nov. 1st, 2007 01:32 amIt's probably pretty clear from my profile and my body of fan fiction work what I like and what I read regarding comic books but I realize now that I've never actually taken the time to talk about what titles I'm a huge fan of and why I'm a fan of them. I intend to rectify this now since I don't feel like sleeping and have nothing else to do at the moment. I'll try to keep it brief but these are books I really love and really think you should check out. It should be noted that I get my comics in trade paperbacks instead of single issues but I still try to stay up on current events. Therefore, if you guys read some of these books and can toss in some more current knowledge then feel free to. Anyways, here we go . . .
X-Factor:
Peter David is probably one of my favorite comic book writers and this book is a solid example of why I think he's the best. X-Factor is a book that's heavy on characterization and light on the usual superhero action. I really enjoy the noir-ish feel of the book especially the first couple volumes. If you read the Madrox mini and loved it then you should be picking up this book. As far as the team goes, they definitely put the "fun" in dysfunctional. I think it's tied with another x-title for my favorite book of the X-Men franchise. What's that other title you might ask? Well, it's . . .
New X-Men:
I've heard all the complaints about all the death and angst and tragedy and whatnot. Honestly, I think the book is even better now than it was before HoM. I had my doubts about Yost and Kyle when they first took the book and I still had doubts when the body count started climbing but they've made the kids who are left over very compelling characters. I honestly think that this generation of x-kids lives up to the hype more than any other generation before it and this comes from a huge fan of Generation X. Like I said, this book is tied with X-Factor for my current favorite x-book and the only reason why X-Factor might win is because I really don't enjoy the current artist for NXM.
Runaways:
Brian Vaughan is another of my favorite writers and even though he's no longer on this title it's still his brainchild and I still love it. If you're a fan of teen books then you should definitely pick this one up. This book, Young Avengers, and New X-Men form this perfect trifecta of books that really showcase what is, to me, the future of the Marvel Universe in terms of characters. The dynamics of this team are great and the character development is solid. Even if you're not a big fan of Marvel comics, I'd still recommend this book since the Runaways are really an island unto themselves and the book doesn't require a lot of knowledge about the Marvel Universe. Great read.
Fables:
So I had heard a lot of hype about this title and saw that it had won like five Eisner Awards or whatever so on the advice of a friend I started reading it. I was moderately hooked after the first paperback but the second one really did it for me. I'm actually behind on this book but I still think it's great. If you like fairytale, fantasy stuff and want to see it interacting with the real world then definitely give this book a try. The only caution I'm going to give you is that it's a DC Vertigo book which means it's a lot like a R-rated movie in terms of language and perhaps the occasional bare female chest. Still, there's a reason why it's won so many awards. It's honestly just pure fun and usually a great read.
Y The Last Man:
Brilliant. Issue 59 comes out in November and the last issue, Issue 60, comes out in January. That's plenty of time to go buy the nine paperbacks and catch up before the last one comes out. Another amazing book from Vaughan that really sucked me in from the start and has yet to really let me down. If you're interested in anything to do with gender then I'd suggest giving this a look. Again, it's DC Vertigo so it's mature for those of you who need a warning but man it's worth the read. Great, great stuff.
Those are pretty much my top five books at the moment but I'll give a couple quick plugs. I've heard mixed reactions about the New Warriors relaunch. I only flipped through one or two issues of it but it seems decent. I've heard Robin has been good lately with the latest issue having some very nice moments so I'll stick with the book. I haven't kept up with the main X-books but I'll definitely give the Messiah CompleX crossover a look when that starts up. Young Avengers one-shots are starting in January and I can't wait because I need my YA fix. Also, for people who like the Question, there is a new paperback called "Zen and Violence" that collects the first six issues of his 1980's series. I haven't picked it up yet but I plan to when I go to the shop next week. Anyways, I think I've rambled enough so give me some feedback. Right now, I think it's time for bed.
