Jan. 6th, 2011 11:10 pmSo this is my first entry of 2011. A lot of people on my flist have been giving their thoughts over Marvel's appointment of Axel Alonso as the new Editor-in-Chief while Joe Quesada is now the "Chief Creative Officer", whatever the hell that means. Most people assume that whatever perceived damage Quesada caused to the good old Marvel Universe will instantly be rectified by our noble and kind new EiC. Much as I might wish that was so, just like our President can't wave his mighty hand and solve all our national woes Mr. Alonso isn't going to just magically undo everything Quesada did. From what I can tell, Quesada is basically still in charge of all the stories and all the creative content at Marvel. The only thing Axel will be doing is managing the business side of the EiC duties, whatever those are. So everyone who thinks that Alonso is the shovel Marvel needs to dig itself out of Quesada's hole, don't be fooled.
I don't know Mr. Alonso's credentials. I know he was an executive editor before this promotion and that he was part of the editorial staff on the X-Men imprint before that, if not the main editorial guy of the whole branch. If this information is correct, and those among my friends who are more knowledgeable are free to correct me if it isn't, then I can't say this track record speaks strongly for Alonso. To be blunt, there are few things I've enjoyed about the X-Men franchise over the past few years. X-Factor is still my favorite X-book but it's really not even an X-book anymore. I was skeptical about the New Mutants relaunch but Zeb Wells won me over with his writing talent and the firm grasp he has on those characters. X-Force was fun for a while but with the new team it just doesn't do it for me. Don't even get me started on Fraction's Uncanny run or the nonsense they're doing with Cyclops (Magneto-Lite). I heard Second Coming was good but haven't read it. They killed Kurt and I'm not pleased with that though it does open up a slot for someone from the next generation to fill. Oh wait, there is no next generation because Marvel just wants its younger mutant characters around for cannon fodder. I forgot that even with one of the upper pantheon dead, the X-Men is still one big old clubhouse of A-listers and no one from the next rung on the ladder will ever really get a decent amount of forward momentum to move up. My bad.
So if Axel Alonso gave us all these things or even some of these things then how do I think he'll do at managing the Marvel Universe as a whole? Well, it's not even a valid question because it looks like Quesada will still be managing the story directions. So everyone that thought Spidey and MJ would magically go back to being married or whatever, you're probably deluding yourselves. I hate to be all doom-and-gloom but things at Marvel aren't really going to change the way you want them to. Marvel has no reason to change. Look at how much mainstream attention and exposure they've received over the past decade and look at how they've turned that attention into increasing sales. Why would they risk screwing up such a profitable deal just because some of their core audience (who still buy the books anyway) are unhappy about their direction? They're too smart to suddenly derail the money train now so it'll keep rolling until it runs out of steam.
Like I said, I hate to be super negative and cynical but I really don't think Marvel is magically going to revert back to the way it was before Quesada took charge. Sorry to disappoint you guys but the new boss isn't really the boss when it comes to the things you care about. Even if Alonso was really in charge, I have a feeling the new boss would be the same as the old boss. So yeah, that's my two cents on the matter.
