1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like.
2. Put iTunes or equivalent media player on random.
3. For each song that plays, write something related to the theme you picked inspired by the song. You have only the time frame of the song: no planning beforehand: you start when it starts, and no lingering afterward; once the song is over, you stop writing. (No fair skipping songs either; you have to take what comes by chance!)
4. Do 5 of these, then post.

Fandom: Batman comics
Character: Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow)

"Pretty, Handsome, Awkward" by The Used (3:33)

He clutches his books to his chest as if some sort of hidden treasure exists inside them, which is true enough for him. He feels the heat rise in his ears and he can sense the eyes on him multiplying with every step he takes. Some people would mistake such attention for popluarity but Jonathan Crane knows better. His spindly legs cease their movement in front of his locker and his fingers twitch as he turns the dial.

"Morning, Crane," says Bo Briggs as he leans against an adjacent locker. Jonathan feels the rest of Bo's friends crowd around him and he knows what will come next. Life in the jungle of high school is never pretty, especially when you're on the bottom of the food chain.

---

"Basket Case" by Green Day (3:01)

Jonathan Crane feels that the inherent downfall of psychiatry is that one has to inevitably actually listen to whatever mundane woes currently plague patients. Jonathan feels no particular need to play nursemaid to a bunch of mentally underdeveloped idiots struggling to "find themselves". People mean very little to Jonathan Crane beyond the interesting reactions he can get from them through various pokes and prods. Psychopathy, on the other hand, fascinates him greatly because of the fear it can invoke in ordinary human beings. Sometimes, looking at such abnormal personalities is almost like looking in a mirror.

---

"A Beautiful Lie" by 30 Seconds to Mars (4:04)

There are times when he reflects on his past and wonders what would have happened had he been blessed with muscles and athletic ability. Would he be able to finally win the heart of the fair Sherry Squire and the adoration of his peers? Would he have gone on to become as successful as he once was or would he have, like most jocks, peaked during his senior year and then spend the rest of his days bagging groceries?

Jonathan Crane knows he could never have been a happy man in that life. That life, that fleeting and fickle thing known as "popularity" is a hollow dream chased by foolish children who are either afraid of expressing their true potential or afraid of the fact that they have no great potential. Scarecrow thinks popularity is vastly overrated. After all, it's better to be feared than admired.

---

"Shove It" by the Deftones (3:35)

The adrenaline kicks in at just the precise moment and he feels the delicious, addictive rush from it as he watches the chaos around him. They're all the same in his mind, all the vapid, pretty people who have everything good life has to offer. He'll show them though. He'll show them and they'll see through the haze of his fear gas the ugliness of life that he's well acquainted with. Their money won't save them, their looks won't save them, their "friends" won't save them. He'll take their meaningless lives and shove them back down their throats before he kills them.

---

"Broken Home" by Papa Roach (3:42)

He watches them from unseen places and he lets an almost sincere smile cross his face. He knows their faces, knows their pain, knows their fears. They are his children, the sheep to his shepard. They are the forgotten, the nameless, the broken. He hears their curses of pain and cries of sorrow. Their kind multiplies at a frightening pace but it's a pace that swells his heart with a twisted sense of pride. The meek are inheriting the earth and it's only a matter of time before they understand that he is their God.

Fandom: Batman comics
Character: Harvey Dent (Two-Face)

"Everlong" by Foo Fighters (4:11)

There are times when Two-Face remembers Gilda, or rather when he gets those memories through Harvey. Harvey's never forgotten her and even though Two-Face thinks it's juvenile the sap still rubs off on him. Two-Face doesn't understand love because Harvey understands it too well but what Harvey doesn't understand is the pain that love causes and the sacrifices love creates. Two-Face steps in at those moments and promises to pick up the slack so there is balance within the whole. Two-Face sometimes wonders what it would be like to be the other side of the coin but that would upset the balance.

---

"Doomsday Clock" by Smashing Pumpkins (3:45)

Two-Face and Harvey agree on a few things. They both look at the world around them and see a world heading towards chaos and anarchy. Where they differ is their attitude towards this seemingly inevitable progression. Two-Face, of course, welcomes the chaos while Harvey still wants to believe that justice is the natural order of things. This continual debate leads both of them to recall the day that Harvey became Two-Face and both of them have to admit that justice can be as harsh and cruel as chaos.

---

"Toxicity" by System of a Down (3:39)

Harvey runs his fingers over the bandages, the skin still tender enough that even the smallest touch causes pain. Harvey remembers what it felt like when the acid hit his skin, when it seeped into his being and began to corrupt more than his face. He knows the burns are going deeper and they're creating more pain than mere bandages can fix. Harvey feels something inside him come out of its hiding place, something he thought was gone but now he learns it was just biding its time. The world is an ugly, toxic place and it eats away at good men like Harvey Dent until nothing but monsters remain.

---

"My Own Worst Enemy" by Lit (2:49)

"Do it!" orders Two-Face, "Do it, Dent, or so help me God . . ." It's the perfect opportunity. Batman's only half conscious and there's a delicious irony in that. This is Two-Face's chance to take control of everything, his chance to have it all.

"He was my friend," counters Harvey.

"He's my enemy!" retorts Two-Face, "Do it!" The gun's barrel brushes against the cowled forehead of the Batman as the body of Two-Face deliberates the vigilante's fate.

"You know that's not how we do things," reminds Harvey, "Use the coin, Two-Face."

"I hate you," states Two-Face as their hand reaches into their pocket for the coin.

---

"I'm So Sick" by Flyleaf (2:56)

Harvey knows that Two-Face is sick. Harvey knows that Two-Face needs help. He's told Two-Face this many times and they've flipped about it. Sometimes, Harvey wins and they turn themselves in. Sometimes, Two-Face wins and they keep playing the game. Fair is fair and both of them abide by fairness above everything. Harvey knows that Two-Face is sick but sometimes he wonders if he is too. Sometimes he wonders if he and Two-Face are just two heads of the same coin with their madness linking them together. He wonders about it but it all comes down to the coin and Harvey knows the coin is always fair.
