My Possibly Incoherent Review of Avengers

What's that you say? I have to be at work in like five hours and I have only one hour of sleep? Well screw that because I'm probably just going to call in sick. So now you get my unadulterated, unedited thoughts on the Avengers movie. For starters, I thought it was pretty awesome. I admit I'm not a huge Joss Wheadon fan like pretty much everyone else my age is but he really brought his A-game with this one. The dialogue was great, the plot was fast-paced without losing the audience, and the action sequences were amazing. So now here comes the character-by-character breakdown.
Iron Man: If you love the RDJ Tony then this is more of the same. I think he was good in this but I feel like maybe the movie was written too much towards him. He has some great interactions with Bruce Banner and Cap but I feel like RDJ's performance kind of overshadowed everyone else's a little bit. Then again, the guy does a brilliant job at playing Tony so I guess I can't fault him for that. I wasn't completely sold on him getting to be the big hero at the end and save everyone. Personally I think that should've been Cap's moment but more on that next.
Captain America: Chris Evans is a better actor than I give him credit. I really enjoyed his performance in the Captain America movie and this is more of the same. I like the jokes they throw in about how he's been frozen for seventy years and is a little out of place. People around him constantly make references to things that weren't around back in his day and so he doesn't get any of the jokes. He's pretty much the ultimate straight man and I wouldn't want Cap any other way. Like I said above, I feel like Cap should've been the one to be the big hero in the end and save the world. It would just feel better for me especially since the impending apocalypse involved the Cosmic Cube, you know that thing he's already dealt with back in his own movie and didn't destroy so now he should get the chance to make up for it. Also I was waiting for them to reveal that the blonde woman he saves in the bank is Sharon Carter but that didn't happen. That would've been so badass if they had done that.
Thor: Again, more of the same from Chris Hemsworth. Since the main villain is Loki, Thor understandably has a pretty large role in this movie. He's really only there as the other heavy hitter besides Hulk though he and Loki do have some good scenes. One of the things I noticed about Thor is how great the continuity is with his character between his movie and this one. He really has changed his attitude, especially where the human race is concerned. Whereas most of the other Avengers are the same as they were in their other movies, Thor is different because of the personal changes he went through in his movie. I think that's just good writing and like I said it helps keep a sense of continuity.
Hulk: To my knowledge, I think this is my first time seeing Mark Ruffalo. Bruce Banner kind of stole the show for me. I was honestly more interested in watching him be Banner than watching the Hulk smash things (although he does beat the holy crap out of Loki). I really loved the scenes with Bruce and Tony. You really get the sense that life must be a little lonely for them because they're always the smartest people in the room. I naturally assumed that Tony would be a jackass to Bruce just like he kind of is to everyone else but he actually respects Bruce's intellect a great deal and the two of them view each other as equals. Like I said, as fun as it was to watch the Hulk go apeshit on the invading aliens, I would've much rather seen more of Bruce Banner.
Hawkeye and Black Widow: I have never, ever cared about either of these characters. I think now I might actually ship this couple. For people who were complaining about Widow's lack of character in Iron Man 2, well, shut up because Natasha gets plenty of character development here. You really feel for her as she tries to save Clint from Loki's evil influence (even though the way she does it is kinda dumb) and it gives her character some depth. Also, Hawkeye is badass. He and Widow worked great together during the final battle and they manage to kick ass without superpowers or suits of armor. Surprisingly good stuff from these two.
Nick Fury and SHIELD: Fury was kind of a dick in this movie. I mean I suppose he has good reasons for trying to harness the Cube's power in order to make weapons to defend the Earth but that's still kind of a dick move. Also I didn't like the whole "pushing them in the right direction" thing he did. Yes he definitely has the planet's best interests in mind but he still seemed kinda manipulative. Then again, he is a master spy. As for SHIELD, it was nice to see Maria Hill not being a huge bitch. Oh yeah and Coulson was fun though I don't like what happened to him in the end. Still, I guess someone had to go.
Loki: Honestly, Loki was the best thing about the Thor movie for me and he doesn't disappoint in this one either. He definitely shows that he's a master manipulator and he lives up to his moniker as the Lord of Lies. I was a little annoyed at first when I heard they were going with Loki to be this movie's villain but now that I see it, it makes sense. This movie needed a really good and really powerful villain and Loki was definitely the right call. Plus it's a nice nod to history since I believe Loki was the first villain the Avengers faced in the comics.
Overall, this movie was pretty freakin' awesome. Yeah there are some nitpicks I've made but really it's a good movie and I think it was worth getting through all the individual ones just for this. I actually got chills a couple times when the whole team was assembled in the same shot and people actually clapped for the scene where they're all back-to-back and about to fight the aliens (you've probably seen it in the previews). This is a great summer action movie and I think it was a great way to kickoff the summer movie season. If you like the Avengers or Marvel Comics or just superheroes in general then you will love this movie. Oh and stay for the credits because there's a scene during them that tells you who the villain will be for Avengers 2. My mind was totally blown when I found out who it was.
